The 'Sony Sketch' was a finalist in the Sony International Student Design Competition in 1990.
This conceptual stylus-based mobile device predated the Apple Newton by 3 years and incorporated the cultural and natural symbolism of New Zealand as expressive design elements. It opened to door to a product design internship at the Sony Corporation Global Product Design Center in Tokyo. The organic forms, stone like material and green accents were chosen to deliberate oppose the prevailing plastic blocks that characterized electronic product design at the time.
